Book (P)Review: David Korten's "The Great Turning"
Having discovered yesterday that cuttin' 'n' pastin' book reviews is a pretty sweet 'n' easy way to fill space, I noticed Karavans has a synopsis of David Korten's upcoming book "The Great Turning" which...
"...argues that corporate consolidation of power is merely one manifestation of what he calls "Empire": the organization of society through hierarchy and violence that has largely held sway for the past 5,000 years. Empire has always resulted in misery for the many and fortune for the few, but now it threatens the very future of humanity. Korten points to global terrorism, climate change, and rising poverty as just a few of the signs that Empire has become unsustainable and destructive."
"The Great Turning" isn't available for another month or so, but you can pre-order thru Amazon.com if you want to gamble that our civilization will still be around by then ('cause you know if it's not you're out like 25 bucks, dude...).
Actually, the "The Great Turning" sounds a little bit like a cut 'n' paste itself of several other classic works (William Kottke's "The Final Empire", Strauss and Howe's "The Fourth Turning", Steven Lagavulin's excellent "Deconsumption" weblog....). But all joking aside, this sounds like a comprehensive study of a very, very important subject for people to confront and understand. Because if we can't learn how to temper our inner drive toward embracing Empire culture, then it's ultimately not much use getting through the coming collapse in the first place.

When you discover bona fide conservatives trashing Bush and the Neocons, what else can you do but quote them wholesale?
:o)
